Low fat? Low sodium? Low carb? High protein?<\/h2>\n<p>When did eating get so complicated?<\/p>\n<p>It hasn\u2019t always been like this. We ate in-season food from our local area and we cooked the recipes our\u00a0mothers or grandmothers taught us to make. We didn\u2019t calculate the number of calories we ate or grams of carbs or fat. We ate real food and we enjoyed it.<\/p>\n<h3>What Went Wrong With Nutrition?<\/h3>\n<p>As a society, we\u2019re arguably better fed than we have ever been, but are we better nourished? There are many new theories that say no \u2013 we have an abundance of food but we\u00a0are starving on a cellular level. I\u2019ve spent the last 14 years totally consumed by nutritional research, trying to figure out what went wrong and how to fix the problem, and I have a few theories.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s difficult to pinpoint an exact place in history where our diet and our idea of\u00a0<a title=\"5 Common Mistakes Of Healthy Eating &amp; How To Avoid Them\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lifeadvancer.com\/5-common-mistakes-of-healthy-eating-how-to-avoid-them\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">healthy eating<\/a> got off track, but if you really want to know, I\u2019d say everything went wrong when the government started to tell us what to eat.<\/p>\n<p>You see, the nutritional sciences are full of inaccuracies. It\u2019s very hard to use the current scientific method to study the effects of a diet on a population. You can\u2019t use a placebo-controlled double-blind study (like they do with drugs), because you can\u2019t create a placebo food. Most dietary studies are simply weak, they use a small group of people and they rely on their memory for their data.<\/p>\n<p>What did you eat for lunch last Wednesday? Do you remember? Now try to remember everything you ate last month and you get an idea of some of the inaccuracies found in the nutritional sciences.<\/p>\n<h3>Conflict of Interest?<\/h3>\n<p>Health Canada and the FDA are trying their best; they really would like us to be as healthy as possible. It\u2019s in their best interests for\u00a0North Americans to be\u00a0fit, healthy, and age well. The Canadian Food Guide and the American Healthy Plate are\u00a0based on the current trends in nutritional science (<em>notice I used the word \u201ctrends\u201d<\/em>), and unfortunately a nice big splash of politics.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the Canadian Food Guide is designed primarily by an advisory committee of 12 people, made up of industry professionals including employees from:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Vegetable Oil Industry Council<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 the folks who bring us refined and processed oils.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The British Columbia Dairy Foundation<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 who have a big stake in keeping the recommended daily dairy intake level high.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Food and Consumer Product Manufacturers Board<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 who bring us the many calorie dense\/nutritionally void products that stock the shelves of your average grocery store.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As a Nutritionist, I question the validity of letting industry professionals who profit from what we eat dictate how we should eat. Instead of eating whole, unprocessed food, and listening to what our body wants (<em>our gut instinct<\/em>), we now decide rationally what we should and shouldn\u2019t eat. We\u2019ve learned to ignore our own instincts for rationality.<\/p>\n<p>But our instincts are right. Well, in general. With one exception (<em>more on that in a minute<\/em>), we can trust our cravings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Craving salt?<\/strong> That\u2019s because your body wants more salt \u2013 add some healthy sea salt to unprocessed food and you\u2019ll feel less anxious and have more energy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Craving fat?<\/strong> Your body may be deficient in essential fats or fat-soluble vitamins. Roast some root veggies or steam some broccoli and add grass-fed butter or <a title=\"Olive oil is the healthiest choice when it comes to frying food, study finds\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lifeadvancer.com\/olive-oil-is-the-healthiest-choice-when-it-comes-to-frying-food-study-finds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">extra virgin olive oil<\/a> and help your body absorb some additional Vitamin A or K.<\/p>\n<p>Craving sugar and sweets? Well, that\u2019s the craving you can\u2019t always trust. A sugar craving is usually due to an imbalance in your gut bacteria or a sign of a blood sugar crash. Rebalance your gut bacteria and you\u2019ll find your sugar cravings will go down dramatically.<\/p>\n<h3>The REAL FOOD Guide (<em>otherwise known as \u201cHow we ate 100 years ago\u201d<\/em>):<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Eat a diet that makes you feel healthy, vibrant and full of energy all day<\/strong>. For some, this might be a high protein diet or a raw food diet\u2026 or a balance somewhere in between. You know you\u2019re eating well when you feel vibrant all day and sleep well at night.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Eat whole, unprocessed food, preferably in season<\/strong>. This includes unprocessed meats, fats, grains, raw, and cooked fruits and vegetables.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Consume foods that are high in vitality every day,<\/strong>\u00a0like fruit and vegetables, raw nuts and seeds, and naturally fermented foods.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Take time to prepare and enjoy your food every day<\/strong>!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>A balanced, healthy diet doesn\u2019t come from a chart or book, and yours won\u2019t be the same as that of your neighbor or your partner.\u00a0<em>Your<\/em>\u00a0healthy diet will be a unique balance of whole, unprocessed food, including healthy fats, sea salt, and natural sugars. <strong>Eat more REAL food and enjoy every bite!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Author Bio<\/strong>: <strong><em>Lisa Kilgour<\/em><\/strong><em>.
